The 萝莉视频 in Wales is delighted to announce that Jess Groves, a year 10 student from St Brigid’s School, Denbigh, has won the RCPsych Wales National Young Person’s Mental Health Research Award 2024/25.

Jess’ project explored the impact of social media on adolescent mental health, focusing on how platforms are designed to be addictive.

After surveying young people aged between 15-22 in her local community, Jess found that reducing recreational social media use by just 1–3 hours per day could significantly reduce mental health problems.

Her research also highlighted ways social media platforms could better support young people, recommending that companies prioritise grouping younger, age-friendly content that is more mindful and positive.

Dafydd Huw, RCPsych Wales Policy and Public Affairs Manager, said:

“We are thrilled to congratulate Jess on this outstanding achievement. Her research sheds light on one of the most pressing issues facing young people today and offers practical solutions that could make a real difference to wellbeing. This award celebrates her hard work and highlights the value of listening to young voices in mental health research."

Jess’ research is  available to read in this document.

The National Young Person’s Mental Health Research Award is an initiative by RCPsych Wales to promote research, innovation, and awareness of mental health problems across the nation.
