About the Thrive in Psychiatry campaign
The College is running a Thrive in Psychiatry campaign to help retain psychiatrists and support our members to thrive in the profession.
During the campaign we will be focusing on many of the challenges psychiatrists face and looking at what can be done to help you thrive at work.
Who is the campaign for?
If you’re a College member and you’re thinking of taking a break, or you’re on a break, or you’re asking yourself whether you should continue in psychiatry, this campaign is for you.
If you’re a resident doctor, if you’re an SAS doctor, if you are a consultant, and you are considering leaving the profession, this campaign is for you.
If you're part of our membership and looking for more support, or if you're seeking a different challenge within psychiatry, this campaign is for you.
If you’re a psychiatrist who knows someone in that position, and wants to support them, this campaign is for you.
If you are a medical director or have a senior position in a mental health trust, health board, health and social care trust or other employer structure, or are in a position to influence the environment psychiatrists and mental health teams work in, this campaign is for you.
Over the next six weeks, starting on 28 October, the College is discussing the issues and signposting support to help you and your colleagues thrive in psychiatry.
What is coming up in the Thrive in Psychiatry campaign
During the campaign we are discussing the role employers play in creating an environment our members can thrive in.
What could and should employer bodies be doing to support psychiatrists, and enable us to provide the best possible care, while taking care of ourselves too?
We will be exploring some of the complex reasons members need to take a break – physical health issues, mental health issues, burnout, the need to care for a loved one – and the challenges of coming back to the profession.
We will look at what a 'good break' looks like – what might you be able to do, while away from work, to ensure your return is as smooth as possible, and enable you to come back with confidence?
And we will talk about the role leaders can play in setting the right conditions to support people returning to work.
We’ll hear from inspirational and eminent members, and ask them about how they’ve overcome the challenges they’ve faced during their career.
Ultimately, we want to support you to not just survive in the professional but to thrive – and that’s why we’ve called this campaign Thrive in Psychiatry.
As well as regular podcasts there will be blog posts, short videos and lots of content on our social media channels.
Signposting reports, papers and other resources
During the campaign, speakers will refer to reports or other resources relating to the themes we're discussing.
Where possible we will be providing links to these in our Thrive in Psychiatry resources section.
We want to hear from you
We very much want to hear from you too – what do YOU need, to help you not just survive but thrive in the profession, and how can the College help that to happen?
The questions and comments you include may influence the content we produce during the campaign – and they’ll be passed on to the College Officers, who will consider them as part of a special Question Time with the Officers.
