Applying for Fellowship
Find out about the eligibility for Fellowship and how to apply. Applications for 2025 have closed. Applications for 2026 will open in Spring.
What is Fellowship of the College?
We award Fellowship as a mark of distinction and recognition of contributions to psychiatry. Fellows are entitled to use the FRCPsych post-nominal as a sign of this accolade.
You can hear more from some recent new Fellows in the video below, and read more about the importance of applying in Dr Sandhu's blog.
Who's eligible?
You're eligible if you've been a Member (with MRCPsych) for 10 continuous years or more and can demonstrate significant contributions to the core purposes of the College:
- setting standards and promoting excellence in mental health care
- leading, representing and supporting psychiatrists
- working with patients, carers and their organisations.
UK and Overseas Members (with MRCPsych) working at any grade can apply, including SAS doctors and retired members. Unfortunately, Affiliates and Associates can't apply.
If you'd like to check whether you'll be eligible to apply for Fellowship in 2026 you can use our new . Simply complete your details and we'll get back to you within one working day to let you know if you're eligible to apply next year.
How do I apply?
Applying for Fellowship is a straightforward process and we'll have guidance to help you submit your application.
We're currently in the process of revising and updating our Fellowship criteria, which means applications will open slightly later in 2026. We'll update this page with the application process and criteria by Spring 2026.
What happens after submission?
All applicants will be told the outcome of their application in November each year.
If you're successful, congratulations! You'll then be able to register as a Fellow, this involves paying the Fellowship registration fee, and usually involves a top-up subscription fee for the end of the year.
Once you've paid the registration fee, you can use the FRCPsych postnominals and will officially be a Fellow of the College.
Please note, once you've registered as a Fellow you can't downgrade your membership back to Member.
If you're unsuccessful, you'll be told why and invited to consider reapplying again in future.

As part of your application you'll be asked to nominate a proposer and seconder. They must both be subscribing College members but they don't have to be Fellows themselves.
Your proposer will be asked to write a citation to support your application. The citation allows someone who knows your work to tell us about your achievements and the ways in which you have contributed to psychiatry. You should choose someone who's very familiar with your work to write the citation.
Your seconder won't need to write a citation as well, they just need to lend their support to the citation that's been written by your proposer.
Don't worry if your proposer and seconder aren't well known in the College, this won't affect your application. We're interested in what they have to say about you and your work, rather than who they are.
If you don't work with any College members, please contact MembershipServices@rcpsych.ac.uk and we'll work with you to find a solution.
An application would be rejected if:
- there is an ongoing GMC investigation or the applicant is under supervision or has a current written warning
- there is knowledge of behaviour that could bring psychiatry into disrepute
- the applicant fails to follow guidance and demonstrate necessary achievements in an application, e.g. not enough information contained on the CV form.
Yes, you're welcome to reapply in a subsequent year if your application is unsuccessful.
When you're told of the outcome there'll be an explanation of why your application was unsuccessful, so this will help you know which areas need strengthening when you come to reapply.
