Psychedelic and related substances for medical use

Position Statement PS02/25, September 2025

There is growing interest in the potential use of psychedelic and related substances (PARS) to treat a range of mental illnesses, as an intervention on their own or in conjunction with psychotherapy. However, as highlighted in this publication, high-quality evidence on the efficacy of these substances remains limited and, therefore, more research is needed, as well as further evaluation of their clinical utility.

This position statement puts forward initial clinical and research recommendations based on the existing evidence base, capturing the consensus view of its authors – RCPsych’s Psychopharmacology Committee and the Working Group on Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy within RCPsych's Medical Psychotherapy Faculty.

We are also have published a research participation guidance document to be read alongside this position statement, which is aimed at supporting psychiatrists who are participating in research in which psychedelic and related substances are being used alongside psychotherapy.

We believe these documents, through their implementation, will help to improve the quality of the research and eventual evidence base for the use of psychedelic and related substances (or not) as a treatment for mental illness, whether solely and/or in combination with psychotherapy.
