What is the Theory Paper Validity Period?
It is the time allowed to complete all remaining components of the MRCPsych examinations after passing the first theory paper. This was previously referred to as the Written Paper Validity Period.
What was the previous validity period and why has it changed?
Previously, candidates had 4.5 years to complete all components. The change to 6 years was introduced to provide greater flexibility for candidates whose training and examination journey may not be linear, and to reduce the administrative burden on those requiring extensions due to circumstances such as part-time work, caring responsibilities, or disability. It also takes into account the on exam currency.
What is the new validity period?
The validity period has been extended to 6 years.
Who does this change apply to?
- All candidates passing their first theory paper from 2025 onwards.
- Candidates whose validity period began between 2021 and 2024 (retrospective application).
Do I need to apply for this extension?
No. The new validity period will be applied automatically.
Will this affect candidates who have already completed the MRCPsych?
No. This is only applicable to candidates currently on their MRCPsych journey.
How does this affect me?
The updated validity period dates are below. They are also available on the College website
The 6-year validity period starts on the date the result was published.
Once you have passed all three College exams, including the CASC, the Membership team will send you details on how to register and subscribe as a Member of the College.
