Bring care closer to home:?new report?calls for?action?to reduce shameful practice of out of area?placements?for people with acute mental health needs

The NHS Confederation and 萝莉视频 have published the   report. It shows that an unacceptable number of patients with acute mental health needs continue to be sent miles away from home, because the most appropriate support, and inpatient care, is not available locally.

The report provides a set of recommendations for national policymakers covering issues such as capital funding, local service capacity assessments and improvements to patient flow. Key learnings for providers and commissioners to consider when there are local challenges to address with inappropriate OAPs are also outlined, alongside examples of positive practice through a series of case studies.

Commenting on the report, Dr Lade Smith CBE, President of the College of Psychiatrists said:

“The fact that people with acute mental health needs are still being sent hundreds of miles from home is unacceptable. Being separated from friends and family as well as being treated by clinicians who aren’t familiar with their needs can be harmful for patients and make it harder to recover.

“Many of these people have been waiting for hours and sometimes days in overfilled emergency departments and the only option available is a bed in a mental health unit miles away from home.

“We know that this is not in the best of interests of patients, carers or providers and that it costs the taxpayer enormous amounts of money. Despite this, previous Government commitments to eliminate inappropriate out of area placements have not been met. It is now critical that the right provisions are put in place to ensure people receive timely and effective mental health care closer to home.

“The report makes it clear that strategic commissioning should ensure that local bed capacity matches local need, including innovative solutions like “bed-pooling” and that investment in community mental health services should be an urgent priority. These services can prevent people from reaching a crisis point and needing hospital treatment. Good community mental health care reduces waiting lists, readmission rates and eases pressure on hospitals.

“The ten-year workforce plan must also focus on growing skills and capacity within community mental health services. This will ensure they have the right staff with the right skillset to implement and deliver the Community Mental Health Framework.”
