The 萝莉视频’ Registrar, Dr Trudi Seneviratne OBE has contributed to a new BBC documentary about the celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal and bipolar disorder.

explores Heston’s experiences being diagnosed, sectioned and treated for bipolar disorder. He also explains how the illness affected his career and loved ones.

Dr Seneviratne provided an expert overview of bipolar disorder. She also raised concerns about the average 10 year waits people face to receive a bipolar diagnosis and the fact that people with bipolar disorder die on average 10 to 15 years earlier than the general population.

Responding to the release of the documentary, RCPsych Registrar, Dr Trudi Seneviratne OBE said:

“Watching someone like Heston Blumenthal speak so openly about his bipolar disorder is incredibly powerful. It brings home just how devastating delays to diagnosis and treatment can be.

“As a College, we’ve long said it’s unacceptable that people often go years without proper support. Heston’s experience echoes what we hear so often that lives are deeply disrupted at a critical age, and people go from crisis to crisis without clarity or care. These stories are why early, specialist assessment is absolutely vital.

“There is a clear need for additional resources to help bring down waiting lists and ensure everyone can access care if they would benefit from it. We also need a specialist care pathway which sets out best practice for services treating bipolar disorder.”
