Overview of the role
The Psychiatrists' Support Service (PSS) provides free, rapid, high quality peer support by telephone to psychiatrists of all grades who may be experiencing personal or work-related difficulties.
Peer Support Psychiatrists (PSPs), who are members of the Psychiatrists’ Support Service (PSS) Committee, will have the necessary skills and expertise in providing support to their colleagues in professional difficulty.
Person specification
The PSS works with PSPs of all grades of doctor from core resident PSPs through to consultant level-PSPs, however we are currently looking specifically for both SAS and consultant grade PSPs and welcome applications from these grades of psychiatrist at the moment.

- A good working knowledge of NHS employment procedures

 - A constructive and thoughtful approach to problem solving and seeking solutions
 - Excellent communication skills
 - Good time management and organisational skills
 - The ability to maintain confidentiality
 - The ability to focus on detail and the ‘bigger picture’
 
Desirable
- Helpline knowledge and/or experience of working in an environment providing support, help and advice to colleagues, and/or coaching/mentoring colleagues, and/or some experience of supporting colleagues in difficulty.
 
Key responsibilities
- Mandatory attendance at a minimum of two out of three Psychiatrists’ Support Service Committee meetings per calendar year.
 - Contribute to reflective case discussion at PSS meetings.
 - In liaison with the Head of Training and Workforce and the Workforce and Retention Manager, assist in supporting colleagues in difficulty.
 - Maintain individual doctor’s confidentiality, ensuring that cases are not discussed outside of the PSS.
 - Ensure that any record-keeping associated with cases is timely and accurate and handed over to the PSS staff within two business days or as soon as possible.
 - Guarantee to destroy any records held about individual doctors once cases have been closed.
 - Ensure communication is made with callers on days/times as arranged by PSS staff.
 - Liaise with PSS staff if personal circumstances or details change, or if availability to provide support to callers changes.
 - Alert PSS staff immediately if there are any serious concerns about any cases under their management.
 - Help to promote the Psychiatrists’ Support Service, e.g. through outreach activity, social media etc
 - Assist in writing/updating information leaflets.
 - Deliver workshops and presentations at external events and conferences once every two years.
