CAPSS celebrates its 15-year anniversary

On 2 April, the College’s Child and Adolescent Surveillance System [CAPSS] celebrated its 15-year anniversary with a special report and symposium, hosted at the College.

The chair Dr Aditya Sharma and the CAPSS Executive Committee welcomed a range of guests and speakers from psychiatry, academia, charities and funding organisations that support mental health research.

The event opened with a warm introduction from the RCPsych President, Dr Lade Smith, and from Professor Steven Turner, President of Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, officially marking the release of the CAPSS 15-year anniversary report.

The symposium served to highlight some of the important areas of research facilitated by CAPSS on the epidemiology of rare mental health conditions and clinical events amongst children and adolescents.

CAPSS is a unique system, enabling research teams to identify cases of interest across the UK and the Republic of Ireland through a process of active surveillance - cases that cannot be identified using more conventional epidemiological research methods.

CAPSS studies have addressed significant knowledge gaps on the presentation, management and diagnosis of a range of rare mental health conditions and clinical events, often devastating for the young people and families affected.

As well as raising awareness of studies supported by CAPSS, a series of panel discussions with representatives from NHS 萝莉视频, NIHR, MQ Mental Health Research and the Colleges’ Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Faculty, helped emphasise the need for increased funding for mental health research, underpinning improvements in patient care.

The Executive Committee would like to extend thanks to all that have supported CAPSS over the years, and to all that joined the event on 2 April, helping to make the day a great success. Contributions from invited speakers with lived experience were especially impactful. Special thanks also go to the young artists and competition winners that attended with their families, whose artwork is displayed throughout the report.
