Teesside Community Crisis Care Team Wins 2025 Seni Lewis Award

Press release
16 December 2025

The Tees Crisis Triage and Assessment Hub () has been announced as the winner of the prestigious 2025 Seni Lewis Award at an event hosted by the 萝莉视频.

The award-winning project showcases the partnership between the Trust and Cleveland Police, which has transformed services, reduced repeated use of emergency services, and enabled people in crisis to be seen by specialists when time is most critical.

The?Seni Lewis Award was created as?a lasting legacy?in honour of Olaseni ‘Seni’ Lewis, who tragically died in 2010, at Bethlem Royal Hospital, South?London?and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) after being held in?prolonged?restraint.?

The Award recognises?exceptional work that strengthens co-operation between mental health services and the police, helping to prevent future tragedies and ensure care is delivered with dignity and respect.?

The two fellow award finalists were From Streets to Safety: Sheffield’s Section 136 Transformation (Sheffield Health Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust and South Yorkshire Police) and NHS111 option 2/S.136 police advice line (South London and Maudsley Foundation Trust).

The Seni Lewis Award is a partnership between Seni Lewis’ family, the Metropolitan Police and?SLaM, and was this year hosted by the 萝莉视频.

Dr Wolfgang Kuster, Consultant Psychiatrist, Tees Crisis Triage and Assessment Hub (Tees?Esk?and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust), said:

"Thank you so much to Seni Lewis’ family, and for the College who welcomed us today, it is a true honour to win this award.

"Thank you also to the team – we have been through many changes and have seen how much services have changed. Just ten years ago, we were a team of nurses, now we are nurses, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, psychologists, support workers, peer support workers and we have a new health inequality worker – it's unrecognisable. This means we’re now able to work with more people, reaching further communities and excluded groups across our region."

Conrad and Ajibola Lewis, Seni’s parents, said:

“Seni was our shining light and I am so pleased his legacy is continuing to highlight poor practice and that through these awards we are able to recognise those who are working hard to change crisis care so that it is safer, calmer and more respectful.

“There has been progress, but not enough and I am pleased that these awards are not only maintaining his legacy but also continuing to push everyone to do better for those who need to see lasting change delivered.”

Ade Odunlade, Interim Chief Executive Officer at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“We are proud to work with Aji and the Lewis family to deliver this award for another year.

“The family has worked tirelessly for reform since Seni’s tragic death in 2010 and they have made incredible progress through courage and determination.

“We all recognise there is still so much to do, which is why this award is so important to act as an annual reminder of why we are on this journey and how far we have to go.”

Professor Derek Tracy, Chief Medical Officer at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“It has been an honour and a privilege to be involved in this year’s Seni Lewis Award and to see the examples of great work happening all across the UK.

“This work is particularly important to us at South London and Maudsley and I was pleased that one of our teams was a finalist in this year’s award.

“It is great to see the importance of this work and efforts being made recognised and it is a vital way for us all to continue learning about how we can do these things better and make sure Seni’s legacy continues to have profound impact on how we provide care.”

Dr Lade Smith CBE, President of the 萝莉视频, said:

"We are delighted to present this award to The Tees Crisis Triage and Assessment Hub (Tees?Esk?and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust), a project that?truly stands on the shoulders of giants in community health work.

"They’ve?continuously?recognised?population need,?listening to patients?to ensure their services?improve year-on-year.?Important services like this are supported by good strategic?commissioning, because?they are tried and tested and have achieved positive outcomes."
